GP net earnings
The mean GP earnings figure is calculated by taking the total GP earnings divided by the number of GPs.
Total GP earnings is made up of:
• Income from the partnership (see below),
• The gross salaries from the practice for any salaried GPs, and
• The gross earnings from the partnership of any long term locum GPs.
The contractor earnings (partnership profits) have been calculated by taking the income from NHS England, CCGs and local authorities for the provision of GP services that relate to the contract or which have been nationally determined as set out in the contract guidance.
This therefore excludes income such as most local enhanced services, training income, premises income, non NHS income, CCG posts and dispensing income (for dispensing practices).
Against this income, costs relating solely to the relevant income have been offset. A proportion, based on the income, of the remaining costs (excluding those deemed to be directly attributable to the excluded income) has also been offset against the relevant income.
Earnings for all 3 types of GP as detailed above are reported pre-tax, national insurance and employee pension contributions.
The total earnings is then divided by the total number of GPs split into 3 categories:
• Full Time GPs (Partners and Salaried)
• Part Time GPs (Partners and Salaried)
• Long Term Locums
For the purposes of this declaration, the guidance stipulates that a full time GP is one working 8 or more sessions per week.
Once again, below is the recommended wording to be included on the website:
"All GP practices are required to declare the mean earnings (e.g. average pay) for GPs working to deliver NHS services to patients at each practice.
The average pay for GPs working in Whitley Road Medical Centre in the 2023/24 financial year was £92,474 before tax and National Insurance. This is for 2 full time GPs, 1 part time GP and 1 locum GP who worked in the practice for more than 6 months.''
